Cardiff residents celebrate scheme’s 40th anniversary
Residents at Wilfred Brook House in Cardiff celebrated the 40th anniversary of the scheme opening with cake and a cuppa.
It was a chance for residents to come together in the communal lounge and get to know their neighbours.
Opened in 1986, Wilfred Brook House in Grangetown, is home to more than 60 residents mostly aged over 55, who live independently in the block of 52 flats.
When we held a Community Conversation at the scheme earlier in the spring, some residents told us they felt the lounge could be used more.
During the anniversary party residents discussed other activities they could organise with help from WWH staff.
Regional Housing Manager, Nicola Draper, said: “One of the themes to come out of our Community Conversation was how little the communal lounge was being used and the sense of isolation some residents felt.
“The 40th anniversary party was just the start; a way for us to help residents to come together, get to know their neighbours and use their skills and knowledge to plan more events.”

“Speaking to residents during our Community Conversation and listening to what’s important to them has helped us to develop an action plan to make improvements based on resident feedback.”
Since the Community Conversation at Wilfred Brook House, Cardiff, in May we have been:
- working with South Wales Police to arrange regular resident drop-in sessions with Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs)
- working with Cardiff Council to make improvements and monitor to waste management
- making improvements to laundry facilities
