We welcome residents into their new homes marking a new chapter in Fishguard pub’s history

 Residents have started moving into their new apartments at Angorfa, Wales & West Housing’s new development of 12 apartments for  people aged over 55 years in the centre of Fishguard.

The affordable housing development on the site of the former Ship and Anchor pub was completed this summer by Wales & West Housing’s construction partners, Jones Brothers (Henllan).

The site’s name Angorfa, which means Anchorage, is a nod to the historic pub, which was demolished in 2024.

Built over three storeys, the homes at Angorfa are designed to HAPPI (Housing our Ageing Population Panel for Innovation) principles, to offer attractive modern homes for older people that can be easily adapted for future care needs. The design includes open walkways and all apartments look out over a shared garden, where residents can meet up and make friends with their neighbours.

All apartments have wide doorways and hallways and accessible bathrooms with showers. Some of the apartments also have views over Fishguard Bay.

The apartments are built to the highest energy-efficiency standards EPC A. They are fitted with:

• solar panels to generate electricity.
• MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery systems). These MVHR systems are designed to improve air quality and energy efficiency for the people living in the homes by bringing fresh air in and taking stale air out of the homes.
• “Mixergy” IHP hot water cylinders which work with solar panels and are approximately three times more efficient than a standard direct electric hot water cylinder.

Wales & West Housing have worked with Choice Homes@ Pembrokeshire to allocate the homes at Angorfa to local people aged over 55 who were waiting on the housing register for suitable, affordable homes.

Glenda Bowen, Regional Housing Manager at Wales & West Housing, said: “There is a great need for high-quality, well-designed, and accessible one-bedroom homes in our town centres for people who are independent and want to downsize and stay close to their family, friends and all the local amenities such as shops and healthcare.

“We worked with Pembrokeshire County Council’s Choice Homes team to allocate the homes using the urban connection policy which means that the majority of residents who are moving in are connected to Fishguard, which is so important in sustaining the community.

“It’s exciting to see the site of an old and derelict commercial building in the centre of the town being brought back to life to benefit the town’s housing need.”

County Councillor Pat Davies, who represents Fishguard, pictured below, was given a tour of the new apartments as residents began moving in.

She said: “I’m very impressed by the quality and design of these homes. They are modern and spacious with plenty of natural light and beautiful gardens.

“We desperately need homes like these in Fishguard for local people who meet the council’s local connection for social housing.
I hope that the residents moving in will be very happy and settled in their new homes. here for many years to come.”
