Image of Sam Morris-Jameson and Peter HardingRedevelopment of the former Cardigan Hospital site has taken a major step forward with construction work starting on site.

Wales & West Housing handed the site over to Tresaith-based Principal Contractor Jamson Estates on Monday 8 June.

Initial work will focus on site set up, site clearance and groundworks. This is expected to take a number of months before work moves on to restoring and upgrading the historic Priory House.

Ahead of the landmark day for the development, which will see 20 homes built on the site alongside offices and a community cafe, Wales & West Housing’s Board visited the site to meet Sam Morris, Director at Jamson Estates Ltd.

Peter Harding, Chair of the Wales & West Housing Board, said: “We are thrilled that work is about to begin at the former Cardigan Hospital site. There have been many unforeseen challenges which we have overcome to get to this point, so it is really exciting that our plans are about to come to life, for us and the local community.

“From this week, local residents and visitors to Cardigan will begin to see construction activity in and around the site as we deliver this important development for the town.

“As well as the positive visual impact of the development on the town when complete, with views of St Mary’s Church and Priory House, we hope that there is a positive economic impact too. It is important to us that we have been able to secure Jamson Estates to work with us on the project, supporting local jobs and the economy in the Cardigan area.”

Sam Morris, Director at Jamson Estates Ltd, said “We are delighted to be continuing our longstanding relationship with Wales & West Housing on this project. As a contractor based only a few miles from the site, we are excited about the project and the work it will be bring for both our directly employed local staff and our local supply chain.”

The development will be built to plans approved in September 2024, which include retaining and upgrading the original Priory House building.

It is expected to take three years to complete. The development will include 20 apartments, a community cafe, offices for Wales & West Housing and public walkways when finished.
