Impact of Llys Onnen marked at official opening

A new development of 43 much-needed affordable homes for over 55s has been officially opened in Abergele.
Wales & West Housing welcomed guests from Conwy County Borough Council to Llys Onnen, a development built on the site of a former care home, on Water Street in the North Wales town.
Residents spoke of their happiness in their new homes when they received a visit from guests.
These included Mark Lee, who had been living in temporary accommodation following the break-up of his marriage.
“Now that I have a place of my own, my three adult daughters can come and visit me more often and help me. I feel really good in my new home,” said Mark, who has a degenerative nerve disease and Reynaud’s Disease and lives with his emotional support dog called Nookie.
Peter Harding, Chair of the Board, officially opened the scheme on behalf of Wales & West Housing.
He said: “We are proud that through Llys Onnen we have been able to add another 43 homes to our housing stock in the Conwy area, where we already have around 300 homes.
“The homes here are modern, warm, energy efficient and conveniently located near the town centre.
“We are pleased to have worked in partnership with Conwy County Borough Council and Castlemead Group to deliver this development which will make a difference in providing more affordable homes for the local area.”

Cllr Stephen Price, Cabinet Member for Housing: “As a newly elected councillor in 2022 Llys Onnen was my first site visit as a member of the planning committee. It is extremely rewarding to see how this partnership with Wales & West Housing can deliver real benefits to our communities.
“These new homes will help to tackle the rising demand for affordable housing within Conwy and the rest of Wales. We are proud and honoured to have worked alongside our partners to bring this development to life for the people of Abergele.”

Construction on Llys Onnen started in September 2023 and completed in September 2025, led by principal contractor, Castlemead Group Ltd, who also attended the event.
The development is a mix of one and two bed apartments and is made of timber frame and designed to meet high levels of energy efficiency.
Features include Air Source Heat Pumps, Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) and Photovoltaic (PV) panels.
