Our new housing development at Dinas Cross, Pembrokeshire is helping to provide affordable homes to help local families stay in the communities where they were born and grew up.

In an area where the average house price is over £330,000, locals are being forced to move out of the area due to the lack of affordable homes for rent.

For new resident Jessica, moving to one of the 14 new homes at Parc Nantwen will give her, and her two young children, the home they have been waiting for.

Jessica returned home to Dinas Cross more than three years ago to be closer to her family.

“I came back to live with my parents while preparing for the arrival of my daughter,” she says.

“After she was born, I started looking for a place of our own. I couldn’t afford anything suitable in the area, and I wanted to stay close to my parents so I could have their support.”

Jessica registered for a home with Pembrokeshire Choice Homes and waited. During that time she shared a room at her parents’ home with her daughter and baby son.

At Parc Nantwen, we’ve worked closely with Dinas Community Council and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park to develop a local lettings policy which gives priority to families and individuals that met the local connection criteria to Dinas, Newport and Bro Gwaun communities. This helps those with a connection stay in rural Pembrokeshire, supporting the community.

“It was fate that I was offered a house at Parc Nantwen. It’s just a five-minute walk from my parents and my daughter will be starting school in September,” says Jessica, who works part-time at a local shop in nearby Newport.

“We’re looking forward to having our own home, and settling into our own routine.

“My parents have been very good to us, but it’ll be nice for them to have their space back and we can create a family home of our own.”

Local couple Sarah & William Lewis moved into their ground floor apartment from their privately-rented house in Dinas.

“We’ve always been happy in our private rented homes, but there is the uncertainty that your landlord might give you notice at any time.”

“We’ve been waiting on the council’s list for housing for 10 years for a home of our own, but we have been restricted by where we could live,” Sarah explains.

“We didn’t want to move away from our family and friends in Newport and Dinas and needed to stay in the area because of William’s work.”

Born and bred in Newport, William has worked at a local hotel and holiday park for the past 39 years.

The couple were delighted when they were offered a new home at Parc Nantwen as they have family living in Wales & West Housing’s neighbouring development Parc Brynach.

“We’ve been struggling with the stairs, so the flat will be easier for us.

“We’re extremely impressed, with our new home. It’s larger than we expected and we have our own patio and our own space.”
