Things you can do to care for your community
Here are some of the things residents can do to keep the areas around their homes litter-free.
- Make sure you put your waste in the right bin so it’s not cross contaminated. If you’re unsure what goes where, and when you should put it out, check with your Housing or Property and Estate Management Officers, who will be happy to help.
- If the bins at your scheme are full, please don’t leave your waste on the ground as it won’t be collected. You could take it back home and put it out early for the following collection when the bins are emptier.
- Avoid putting bulky household items out with household waste or in bin stores as they won’t be collected unless you’ve arranged a specific collection with the local authority.
- If you have arranged to put bulky items out for collection, make sure they are in the right place on the right day and are not wet.
- Alternatively, if your large items are in good condition and reusable, you could try donating to charity. Some charities can collect and resell. You could also offer the items to family or friends, or give them away on local online marketplaces.
Check who’s taking your waste away
You may not knowingly fly-tip; but if you give your waste to an unregistered waste carrier you may have found online, and they dump it illegally – you could be the one who gets a £300 fine and a criminal record.
Fly-tipping Action Wales says everyone has a legal duty of care to make sure their unwanted household waste is disposed of legally and responsibly. It advises households to always check whether a person or company is a licenced waste carrier with a registered licence before paying them to remove waste from your home. Only licenced people or companies are legally allowed to collect and transport other people’s waste as a business.
Avoid paying people by cash, if you can, and ask for a receipt. Record details of the vehicle involved (i.e. car manufacturer and registration number).
You can check if the person you are using is registered on the Natural Resources Wales website.
