South Wales: Two extra care schemes for South Wales
More than 200 new homes are taking shape across South Wales, including two extra care schemes.
In Penarth, the foundations are laid and the framework is going up at Hafan Y Dderwen (pictured). The £20m scheme is next door to our existing older persons’ housing scheme at Oak Court, Myrtle Close. It’s our first extra care scheme in South Wales and will provide 70 self-contained apartments for older people with care and support needs.
Hafan Y Dderwen is being built in partnership with the Welsh Government, Vale of Glamorgan Council and Cardiff & Vale Regional Partnership Board and is expected to be ready for residents to move in towards the end of 2026/early 2027.

Our long-term construction partners, Hale Group Limited, are building the scheme. They are also working on a second extra care scheme in the centre of Brecon.
Last year, we were granted planning permission by the Bannau Brycheiniog Planning authority to build the 66-apartment extra care scheme on the former Roy Hatton car sales site on Free Street.
Demolition has been completed and soon work will begin to lay the foundations. The development is expected to be ready for residents to move in to by 2028.
These developments are among 211 currently under construction across South Wales, including 17 new houses, apartments and bungalows for affordable rent at St Brides’s Road, Wick and 18 houses and apartments at Heol Y Pentir, Rhoose.
