Don't let fraudsters into your life

One of the most common scams affecting our communities recently is courier fraud. This is when people are targeted by fraudsters who call and pretend they are the police, from a bank or another official organisation. They will say there has been fraud on your account and arrange for a courier to collect cash, bank cards or both from your home.

They might also ask for details such as your PIN over the phone before a courier collects your credit or bank cards.

As part of the scam, they might present you with cover stories or say your account is at risk if you don’t act fast.

South Wales Police, who have received reports of these frauds, recently issued a warning. They say, “fraudsters who carry out these scams are often very convincing and give what might appear to be plausible cover stories.

“We continue to receive reports of this scam. So please, if you have older or vulnerable relatives, speak to them. Help them to stay vigilant against fraudsters.”

Remember:

  • your bank or the police will never call you and ask for personal details or your card PIN. If you get a call like this hang up and then make a call to your bank using their official phone number to check.
  • your bank or the police will never send a courier to your home to collect cash, bank cards or both.
