Free things to do in the summer holidays

Discover free family fun in Wales this summer!

As the summer holidays get underway, households across Wales are looking for low or no-cost things to do with the family. Here are some ideas for places to visit and things to do.

Explore the great outdoors

Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park

Get close to nature with a visit to the Brecon Beacons. The park is a great place to take a picnic and chill out in the shadow of South Wales’ highest peak Pen Y Fan. If you’re feeling fit, you could even walk some of the many trails. It’s also a good place to try geocaching. With geocaches hidden throughout the park, it’s a good way to keep kids engaged and active.

Wales Coast Path

Stretching 870 miles, the Wales Coast Path is perfect for family walks and wildlife spotting. Among the highlights are Llanddwyn Island in Anglesey, a magical spot that feels like a fairy tale come to life, or the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, the UK’s only coastal national park which has some of Wales’ most beautiful beaches.

If you’re planning a hike with the family, there are some simple tips to stay safe. Make sure you wear suitable footwear for walking and dress in layers. Plan your route before you set off. Check the weather and take lots of water, snacks and a map. And remember don’t push yourself, go at a pace that feels comfortable. After all you want to enjoy your day out!

The Big Cheese Festival

Head to Caerphilly for The Big Cheese Festival on August 30 and 31 to enjoy a weekend of medieval reenactments, live music, and, of course, cheese tasting! Lots of stalls, music and entertainment. Don’t forget the Cheese Race, which is free to enter.

Brecon Jazz Festival

Brecon is buzzing from August 8-10 as the world-famous jazz festival kicks off. Although many of the concerts are ticketed, there’s also a variety of free events, making it accessible for families looking to enjoy live music without spending a fortune.

Unique experiences

Dolphin spotting in Cardigan Bay

While there are paid boat trips available, you can also spot dolphins, porpoises, and seals from the clifftops of Cardigan Bay. Some of the popular spots are Mwnt and Newquay in Ceredigion. It’s a magical experience that kids will remember for years.

Margam Country Park

Home of the Urdd Eisteddfod in May, this Port Talbot park has beautiful grounds, which include a castle, ornamental gardens, and a deer park. Entry is free but parking costs £8.50 per day, and there may be entry fees to special events.

Tips for a budget-friendly summer
