Cutting season is here

Summer’s here and our grounds maintenance teams at Cambria Maintenance Services are gearing up for a busy time.

With longer, sunnier days, the gardens and green spaces around our schemes burst into life.

It’s the “cutting season” for our ground maintenance staff, as grass – and weeds – love to thrive and need a bit of extra attention.

With the majority of birds having grown and flown the nest, our teams are now able to cut back hedges and look at trees that present a danger.

In addition to their year-round site cleaning and litter-picking, typical grounds work this time of year includes:

Routine mowing and strimming

In the summer months, grass needs regular cutting every couple of weeks.
In some areas, our site teams have swapped their petrol-driven strimmers for cleaner, quieter battery-powered cutters, which they charge as they drive from one site to another.

Managing weeds

If left, weeds such as dandelions and nettles, can grow wild during this time, summer months, so our grounds teams regularly monitor and treat weeds on paths and patios around our schemes as part of their regular tasks.

Giving wildlife a home

In West Wales, our grounds maintenance teams have been carrying out trials to “rewild” some of the communal grassed areas on our schemes to make them more attractive for wildlife.

We’ve identified areas, where the grass is allowed to grow longer.

In some areas the grass is cut every 2-6 weeks allowing wildflowers such as daisies and clover to grow and provide pollen for bees and other insects to thrive. – what we call “nectar cuts.” In other areas we’re cutting the grass twice a year, called “meadow cuts”, creating habitats for wildlife such as hedgehogs and voles.
